Latest Updates from Our Project:

THANK YOU for Expanding the World
about 7 years ago – Sat, Mar 04, 2017 at 06:06:00 AM

Your support enabled us to unlock a huge number of stretch goals: whole new chapters for the almost 400-page setting tome, books of new lairs and adventures, our first DM screen ever, and a whole player's handbook of character options. This is a huge, huge step forward for the Midgard Campaign Setting, for 5th Edition and Pathfinder players, and for anyone who loves traditional fantasy settings. It's a massive win for both existing Midgard fans and for people new to the setting. You made it possible.

We've been working on these books since the summer of 2016, and now you've given us a few additional assignments--and we're happy to have them! The future holds lots of playtests, brainstorming, and much more.

To put it in perspective: The initial funding goal for this whole project was roughly the entire budget for the 2012 edition of Midgard, and for that one we pinched every penny until it bled, scrounged every favor, and somehow made it work. For this edition, we are commissioning some astonishing design, mouthwatering art, and amazing talent from editors, developers, layout, and cartography. Midgard has entered the category of fantasy RPG settings that are popular enough to get a second edition. That's a huge deal, and a great vote of confidence.

What now? We're going to take the weekend off, then get down to work on Monday.

Thank you, and may the greatest ley lines roll your way.

As always...onward!

Dragon Magic, Star Citadels, and Joy
about 7 years ago – Sat, Mar 04, 2017 at 05:54:40 AM

Friends and Backers,

Huzzah, we have danced the dance of kobold joy today, because so many new backers helped add Dragon Magic to the player books, not mention adding the Star Citadel and additional Void lore to the setting book. We've got a real sense that things are going well in the final day!

Of course, it all closes out tomorrow at 1 PM Pacific (4 PM Eastern), and before then we hope a few of you will ask a friend or player to pledge $1 toward the Open World, or pick up a book or PDF. Tell a friend, send an owl, tap on arcane devices, whatever you humans do!

Even though the final hours are unpredictable, this project has been going strong. The word is still getting out, thanks to you--and yes, every Reddit/Facebook/Twitter/G+ share and post matters! We're adding a nice cherry on top to the run, and the $1 backers are getting a great deal, by the way: audio from Plate Mail Games, two Pathfinder PDFs from Misfit Games, and an ear to the ground for what's going on in the project once the crowdfunding phase ends.

Mostly, just want to say keep pushing, and let's add at least one more lair!

Happy gaming,

Wolfgang and the Kobold Crew

Goblins, Tarrasques, Spin Control, Pathfinder Guide, & Strange Noises
about 7 years ago – Sat, Mar 04, 2017 at 05:54:32 AM

It's the final run to wrap up the project in the coils of the World Serpent, and we're well on our way! Because you helped us add not only Elemental Magic but also the Star Citadel and Void Lore stretch goals today, the books have gotten richer and bigger and extremely pyrotechnical (why is it always pyromancers). Those are awesome additions, and thank you for getting us there!

Also, we have announced Dragon Magic and a final Eldritch Lair, and also confirmed with Amanda Hamon Kunz that the Shadowsworn class for PFRPG will be in the Player's Guide. Things are looking very strong for this project, but there's always room for a few more things, right?

Weird, wild, strange last-minute wishes! Fanciful gifts from other publishers and creators. Desperate pleading for just one repost and a share. You know, the typical last 48 hours of a Kickstarter (when you really want to talk about everyone else's cool project for a while). With that in mind, behold our menagerie of things! Only some of which are kobold things, but all are there for good gaming!

A Menagerie of Gaming

Open World: To reach the Open World goal we need precisely 460 more pledges of $1 or more. That's a lot in 40 hours. The only way this happens at this late stage is if backers ask fellow players from their home groups to kick in, or if Matthew Mercer decides to give us a shout-out live on Critical Role (unlikely). Please, tell your friends to kick in to open a world!

Free Eldritch Lairs Loop: The fine people at Plate Mail Games have created an eerie, 10-minute audio loop for James Haeck's "Pit of the Dust Goblins" lair. It's a free download here, and great ambience for wastelands dungeons. The Kobolds hope to work with PMG on more Midgard soundtracks later this year.

Also, they are doing the Numenera Audio Collection right now. Take a listen!

Pathfinder Player's Guide Preview: Here's a preview of the developing table of contents for the Player's Guide for Pathfinder RPG. That volume will also contain the Shadowsworn class, and a few surprises that did not make it into this layout. The sample TOC does give a good idea of just how much player-centric goodness is in this project for Pathfinder, though! (And hey, here's the link for the 5th Edition Heroes Handbook, just for equal time.)

All Hail Joe the Tarrasque! There's an awesome 5E-ish Book of the Tarrasque out, about how to use the tarrasque in your campaign and make it easy. We recommend it highly because we know that tarrasques eat gnomes (our hated foes) by the fistful. Encourage the Tarrasque campaign! Stamp out gnomes! Check out this book!

Silly Card Games: The Alternative Facts card game from Frog God Games is silly, fun, and NOT POLITICAL. We recommend it if you like to laugh and have an awesome poker face. Or if you like frogs. (Seriously, it's like $1,000 short of funding. So... Close!)

Pathfinder Werecreatures: Misfit Games has pledged at least 2 and possibly 3 lycanthropic adventures and supplements to any and all Midgard backers if we hit 1600 Backers and 1650 Backers on our way to the Open World. They want to publish in the Midgard Open World, and because we like giving our backers more PDFs, we said HECK YES we will happily add those to the pile!

Are we giddy yet? Have we shorted ourselves on sleep once too often? Possibly! Join us for the last 40 hours of descent into Vril magic, Draconic Majesty, and maybe dabbling in a 13th Age of Swords & Wizardry! With craggy shadows and an increasingly erratic Kobold-in-Chief!

Thank you for a great day, and as always,

Happy gaming!

Wolfgang, Marc, Wes, Bill, Christina, and the usual motley collection of Divine Frogs, Animated Armors, and Other Misfits

PS. Really, please, do bend someone's ear about pledging $1 to the Open World. We can do this!

Sneak Peek: Heroes Handbook for 5th Edition
about 7 years ago – Sat, Mar 04, 2017 at 05:54:28 AM

We’ve talked before about what you can expect to see in the 5th Edition Heroes Handbook. But since then, a ton of new content has been added to it via stretch goals—to the point that it's grown into an altogether new and different book from the humble tome we envisioned!

Here are the highlights. To see its full majesty, download the sample Table of Contents.

  • 7 major PC races, and 8 minor ones
  • 14 new martial class options
  •  New weapons and new weapon maneuvers
  • 16 new divine domains for the Midgard pantheon (or others, if you like)
  • Up to 18 new arcane traditions, origins, and patrons
  • At least 19 new feats, possibly more
  • 14 new Backgrounds and 2 variants
  • 4 new creatures
  • New spellcasting rules for major magical variants
  • Over 300 new and newly-collected spells!

That’s a pile of options heading into further playtest very soon. Thank you for making it possible, and happy gaming!
